J.P. Bryan is a sixth generation Texan and a descendant of Stephen F. Austin’s sister.  A dedicated preservationist and passionate collector of Western art and artifacts, Bryan has spent five decades preserving Texas history.

In 1978 J.P. and his wife Mary Jon purchased the deserted Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas. Their dedicated restoration efforts brought the beautiful Mission-style hotel back to life and helped revitalize this West Texas town near Big Bend.

The Bryan Museum in Galveston, opened in 2015 in the old Galveston Children’s Orphanage, houses most of J.P.’s vast collection of Texana - around 70,000 artifacts. The museum, which has exhibits on colonial Spanish Texas, Mexican Texas, and the Texas Revolution, is open to the public.

His leadership of such institutions as the Texas State Historical Association, the Texas Historical Commission, the Institute of Texan Cultures, and the Pioneer Arts Foundation further demonstrates the depth of his commitment to the preservation of the story of Texas and its diverse cultures.
